Memoir

A memoir is a true account of part of the author's life, shaped around a theme or period and told with a narrative voice, unlike an autobiography, which tries to cover a whole life in order.

An autobiography says: here is my life, in order. A memoir says: here is one part of it, and here is what it meant. The first is a record. The second is a story.

The differences

  • Scope. An autobiography spans a life. A memoir takes a slice: a childhood, a war, a divorce, a year in another country.
  • Shape. An autobiography follows the calendar. A memoir follows a theme and may jump around in time.
  • Voice. A memoir leans on reflection and feeling, using devices of fiction: scenes, dialogue and a clear arc.
  • Authority. The autobiographer is often famous. A memoirist need not be, because the book rests on the quality of the telling.

The truth question

Memoir promises that the events happened. That does not mean every quoted word is recorded, as nobody remembers dialogue exactly. Honest memoirists reconstruct, tell the reader they have done so and avoid inventing. Compressing time or changing names to protect people is common and usually disclosed in a note.

Why it matters to a writer or editor

Memoir editing is part story editing, part gentle truth-checking. An editor asks what the book is about beyond the events, where the author stands in relation to their younger self (see narrative distance) and whether the author's inner life is on the page (interiority). The common failure is the list of events with no point of view on them. Find the question the book is answering and organise around it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a memoir and an autobiography?

An autobiography covers a life from birth to the present, usually in order. A memoir covers a chosen slice, such as a year, a relationship or an illness, and is organised by theme and feeling as well as time.

Does a memoir have to be completely factual?

It must be true to the author's memory and not invent events. Dialogue is usually reconstructed, and good faith matters. Memoirs that were exposed as fabrications caused public scandals.

What are well-known memoirs?

Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Educated by Tara Westover and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.
