Loose sentence

A loose sentence states its main idea at or near the beginning and then adds qualifying detail after it, so the sentence could have stopped at several points along the way and still made sense.

She got the apology, after a year of being told the file had been mislaid, after the fourth set of forms, after the third lawyer. Compare the periodic sentence built from the same material, where the apology arrives last. Here it arrives first, and everything after it is elaboration.

The test is whether you can stop early. She got the apology is a sentence. She got the apology, after a year of being told the file had been mislaid is a sentence. A loose sentence has several possible full stops inside it, and the reader is never holding an unfinished thought.

That is why loose sentences read quickly even when they are long, and why most English prose is loose by default — it is also how people talk. The relaxation is genuine: a reader can stop paying close attention after the main clause without losing the thread.

The costs are the flip side. Nothing is held back, so nothing builds; and because the shape invites addition, a loose sentence can run on well past the point where anyone still cares. Trim the tail so it ends on a detail worth the final position, since the end still carries the stress. Its most disciplined form is the cumulative sentence, where each addition is chosen rather than merely allowed.
